Pharma training matrices list GMP basics, hygiene, SOP reading and job-specific skills. Few list AI, even though analysts summarise deviations with chatbots, QA drafts SOPs with assistants and safety teams test AI case intake. In the EU, AI literacy has been a legal obligation since February 2025. In GMP, it is about to become an inspection question.

Digital Omnibus on AI enters into force, recalibrating Article 4

What the law asks

Article 4 of the EU AI Act requires providers and deployers of AI systems to address the AI literacy of their staff and of others who operate AI on their behalf, taking into account their knowledge, experience and the context in which the systems are used. The 2026 Digital Omnibus kept the duty but recalibrated it: organisations must take measures to support AI literacy, rather than guarantee a "sufficient level" for every individual, and the Commission and Member States will provide guidance.

For a GMP company, the softer wording changes little in practice. EU GMP Chapter 2 already requires that personnel are trained for their tasks and that training effectiveness is assessed. Once AI tools touch GMP work, the training to use them safely is GMP training.

In April 2026, a manufacturer told FDA it had not known process validation was required because its AI agent never mentioned it. That is an AI literacy failure as much as a GMP failure.

Who needs to know what

AI literacy is not one course for everyone. The depth depends on the role and on how critical the AI use is.

What a good AI literacy module covers

How these tools fail
Confident but wrong answers, missing requirements, outdated regulations, and why fluent text is not evidence.
What never goes in
Patient data, unpublished batch data and confidential documents in unapproved tools.
Review before record
How to check AI output against the source requirement, and who signs before it becomes a GMP or GVP record.
Escalation
What to do when an AI tool gives a result that looks wrong, and how to report it.

The career angle

For quality, regulatory and safety professionals, AI literacy is quickly becoming a differentiator. The people who can design a review gate, validate an AI-assisted workflow and explain it to an inspector will be in demand, especially in markets building new manufacturing and pharmacovigilance capacity. Pairing deep GMP or GVP knowledge with practical AI judgement is one of the most valuable profiles in the industry today.

ADD AI TO YOUR TRAINING MATRIX IN FOUR STEPS
1Build an inventory of AI tools in use, including personal use of public chatbots for work.
2Define the required depth per role, as in the matrix above.
3Deliver role-based training and record it like any other GMP training.
4Check effectiveness: sample AI-assisted records and confirm the review actually happened.

Molgenium's team training packages can include AI literacy for GMP and pharmacovigilance teams, alongside data integrity and computerised systems. Request a team offer.
